Countdown Timer
Count Down to Any Date or Event
A countdown creates a concrete sense of how much time remains — turning an abstract future date into a live, ticking number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Whether it's a vacation, a deadline, a birthday, or retirement, putting a countdown on it changes how you experience the time between now and then.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter an event name and a target date and time. Hit Start Countdown to begin the live timer — it updates every second automatically. The results show days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining, plus total hours until the event.
Common Uses
- Vacations and trips — days until departure make the anticipation feel real
- Deadlines — project due dates, tax filing, contract expirations
- Birthdays and anniversaries — give the date a number and it becomes a goal
- Events — concerts, sports seasons, product launches, elections
- Personal milestones — retirement, graduation, new job start date
- New Year — the classic countdown: Dec 31 at midnight
The Donut Chart
The donut places your event in the context of the current year — the grey arc shows days already elapsed in the year, the blue arc shows days remaining until your event. This gives quick visual context: is your event this month, next quarter, or end of year?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the countdown keep running if I leave the page?
The timer pauses when you leave and resumes when you return — just click Start Countdown again. Since it calculates from the target date against the current time, it's always accurate when restarted regardless of how long you were away.
What happens if I enter a past date?
The calculator shows that the event has already occurred and displays how many days ago it was. This is useful for calculating elapsed time since a specific event — how many days since you started a new job, quit a habit, or moved to a new city.
How do I count business days instead of calendar days?
This countdown shows calendar days. For a business day countdown, use our days between dates calculator which shows an approximate business day count alongside the calendar day total.
How accurate is the countdown timer?
The timer is accurate to within 1 second per update cycle. It recalculates from the target date and the current time every second, so it self-corrects if the tab is backgrounded or the browser throttles the interval. For sub-second precision timing (race clocks, competition timers), a dedicated hardware timer is more appropriate.
Can I count down to an event in a different time zone?
Enter the event's local time, then use our Time Zone Converter to find the equivalent in your local time zone — then enter that local time here. For example: a New York event at 8 PM ET = 5 PM PT. Enter 5 PM in your Pacific time zone countdown to get the correct local count. The countdown always compares against your device's clock.
